5 Time Saving Tips For Buying Door Mats

Door Mats
You’ve just cleaned and vacuumed your floor when suddenly you hear the door close and the pitter-patter of tiny little feet running inside. Then you see a trail of what can only be mud and dirt in your once immaculate floor. I’m sure you’ve experienced this scenario once in your life. Oh how frustrating that must be! Which is the very reason door mats were created. Door mats primarily serve the function to keep dirt and grime that have accumulated in the soles of your shoes away from your homes. Having a door mat in every entrance to your house is therefore of utmost importance if you want to keep your homes clean and free from outside dirt. But before you go and run to the nearest home supply store, here are some tips for buying door mats that may help you choose the right ones for your home.

1. For door mats that are going to be used outside your home, make sure that you purchase one that will be able to survive any type of weather. Because it will be subjected to every element of nature – sun, rain, wind and snow – be sure to choose one made of material that will be able to withstand harsh climates. Waterproof doormats like rubber mats are a good bet unlike coir or wooden doormats, which appear sturdy but are not as durable and heavy-duty. While stylish, they do not hold up as well to the forces of nature and retain a lot of moisture making it a good breeding ground for molds. You wouldn’t want these in your homes now would you?

2. Opt for a doormat that has an abrasive surface or “scraper” to effectively remove dirt and mud from your shoes.

3. Make sure you choose a heavy door mat which will not move when stepped on or choose one with a base that has a non-slip material. Good options are mats with suction cups at the bottom so that they hold the mat in place while you or your guests wipe your feet on the mat.

4. One of the important tips for buying door mats is maintenance. Buy a doormat that is easy to clean. Your doormat will ultimately end up being filthy and clean up may be a challenge. Aluminum or rubber mats are easy to maintain because they are stain resistant. Mats made of aluminum can be cleaned by just wiping them with a damp cloth. Rubber mats, on the other hand, can be easily hosed down. Whatever you decide on, make sure it is one you will be able to maintain easily. A clean door mat will serve its purpose better than a dirty one.

5. Probably the last consideration among the tips for buying door mats would be the design. Although there are many designs available that are quite beautiful, functionality usually trumps aesthetics. Your fancy doormat will only be noticed while it is new, but as people wipe their feet more often on it, it undergoes a lot of wear and tear and eventually no one will even notice the design anymore.
Of course, you would still want something that looks attractive. After all, your doormat leads to the entrance of your home. Choose dark colored mats because they camouflage dirt best. No matter how often you clean light colored mats, they just end up looking dirty in time.

Hopefully these tips for buying door mats will be a useful guide for you and cleaning your floors and keeping it that way will not be so much of a challenge anymore. Doormats are an inexpensive and easy way to keep mud out of your house at the same time they give your doorway a friendly and inviting welcome to all your guests.
